Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge / Bagamoyo

The romantic Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge is located on the Swahili coast on an offshore tongue of land with snow-white fine sandy beaches on the Indian Ocean and can be reached with a 30-minute boat trip that crosses several times a day from the historic city of Bagamoyo (13km). The crossing to the tropical island takes place several times a day (at 12:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.) from the Mbegani Fisheries Institute in Bagamoyo with guarded parking lots and 24-hour security service.

Between 1887 and 1891 Bagamoyo was the capital of German East Africa and there are some well-preserved colonial buildings to visit. The historic city of Bagamoyo (Swahili meaning: lay down your heart) was the most important settlement in East Africa and the terminus of trade caravans and gained notoriety as the end of the slave route from Lake Tanganyika to the Indian Ocean. European explorers such as Henry Morton Stanley, David Livingstone and Richard Burton started and ended their expeditions exploring the African continent from Bagamoyo.

The Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge is managed by the well-known and renowned Fox Family Group, which passionately runs several lodges and camps in Tanzania, including their social, sustainable and ecological commitment as well as the protection of wilderness and nature.

The picturesque Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge on the offshore peninsula is 2 kilometers from the mainland and can be reached in 1.5 hours (approx. 75 km) from Dar es Salaam. After an exciting safari in Tanzania, a hike on Kilimanjaro or simply escaping the bustling city of Dar es Salaam, the Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge is the perfect hideaway for a relaxed stay. On the long "Barefoot Islands" with a pristine white sandy beach you will find unique "Robinson Cruso" flair in an extraordinary and private atmosphere.

The small island paradise forms a private nature reserve is protected by a coral reef with miles of pristine sandy beaches surrounded by mangrove forests and a diverse ecosystem. The adorable island is home to vervet monkeys, genets, bush babies, dik-dik, colorful starfish and a variety of other sea creatures. Despite the tides with spectacular high and low tides, swimming in the Indian Ocean is always possible and due to its location off the mainland, the island is at times exposed to strong currents.

The Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge with its 9 km of fine sandy beach can be visited all year round and enchants its guests with its informal and relaxed atmosphere. On the small private island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 12 rustic, airy and spacious beach bandas in a tropical-maritime style and authentic Makuti roofs and verandas with a direct view of the turquoise blue ocean await you. The quaint beach bungalows are built in traditional Swahili architecture using local materials and have high, pitched roofs to capture the cool sea breezes with direct access to the Indian Ocean.

The charming bungalows are en-suite with a choice of twin or double beds and an upstairs 'loft' with a lounge area and balcony to relax in and a veranda with unobstructed sea views and direct beach access.

The main building with a spacious restaurant and bar -& lounge area with high ceilings and wooden floors can be reached via small, shady sandy paths. There, daily changing freshly prepared and exquisite dishes are served by the attentive, helpful and friendly staff. Guests enjoy stunning sunsets on the Swahili-style day beds in the upstairs Sunset Lounge and lounge by the beautiful outdoor pool for relax and unwind.

Various water sports activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, sailing or romantic trips on the typical dhow are offered. Historical excursions to Bagamoyo are also possible. Enjoy endless walks on the white sandy beach and the sound of the Indian Ocean.
