Since November 2023, Kaliwa Lodge has been expanded to include five more fantastic bungalows, which extend onto the adjacent property. The 55 sqm bungalows offer more space and an additional 10 sqm balcony with a private view of the rainforest and the majestic Kilimanjaro in the background. In addition, the bungalows have large beds, bathrooms with shower, toilet and two sinks, fireplace, desk, coffee and tea making facilities and room service on the private terrace.
Another special feature is the viewing deck with a view of the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro which rises from the clouds and into the Weru Weru River Valley, which is densely surrounded by forest. The terrace is the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries with a view of the roof of Africa. The heart of the cube-like restaurant is with an open fireplace and its noteworthy works of art that have been collected by Mr. T. Thielke from his worldwide visits.
Here, Lina, the incredible head chef and her talented team, create international culinary delights and fantastic fusion cuisine from local and fresh ingredients from the hotel's own garden, which inspires visitors again and again. The Kaliwa Lodge is also the ideal location for a day hike on the Marangu Route (also known as the Coca-Cola Route). Walk in the footsteps of Hans Meyer, the first German to climb in 1889 and Yohane Lauwo as the first Tanzanian, on a day hike from Marangu Gate at 1,879m. This unique experience leads through fairytale, tropical, ancient mountain rainforest with clear streams on a distance of 8 km to the Mandara Hut (formerly founded in 1906 as the Bismarck Hut) at an altitude of 2,720 meters and takes between three to five hours. If you still feel like it, there is another short hike to the Maundi crater, 15 minutes away, with a view from the crater rim on a clear day to the Pare mountains.
In addition, the lodge is the perfect starting point as the first stop for our guests of Ndoto Safari to visit the eastern national parks such as the incomparable Mkomazi National Park with its unique landscape between the Pare Mountains and the proximity to the Kenyan border in the Tsavo West National Park passes. Here one encounters large herds of elephants and giraffes as well as the black rhinoceros and the very rare African wild dogs. On the outward and return journey, an overnight stay in the unusually beautiful Kaliwa Lodge is firmly planned and our guests are always enthusiastic.
There are also hikes to the nearby waterfalls of the Weru Weru River or a coffee tour to the nearby plantations as well as excursions to the wonderful hot springs of Chemka, which are located near Moshi.
