Der AMREF Flying Doctors Service

Sustainable healthcare and emergency evacuations by air

AMREF, the African Medical and Research Foundation, is the largest non-governmental healthcare organisation in Africa. Since 1975, its aim has been to provide better healthcare in Africa with local specialists. Its priority is to help people to help themselves. The organisation therefore focuses on the training and further education of medical personnel. The AMREF Flying Doctors support AMREF's projects because they make it possible to reach even the most remote regions of East Africa with medical care.

What exactly is the role of the AMREF Flying Doctors?

The AMREF Flying Doctors support AMREF's "Clinical Outreach Programme" for rural health care. A good 50 years after its development, this programme is an integral part of rural healthcare in Africa. The central element of the programme is the implementation of regular visits to rural areas that are not supplied with medical infrastructure by the state. The programme also focuses on the training and further education of local doctors, nurses, midwives and healthcare workers. In this way, the hospitals can become more independent in the long term.

In addition to supporting the clinical outreach programmes, the AMREF Flying Doctors are primarily active in the field of emergency evacuations. The emergency service helps both local patients from rural areas and tourists - via a Flying Doctors membership for tourists. Membership of AMREF Flying Doctors also ensures that tourists have access to medical care in the event of an emergency. Transfer to modern treatment centres is guaranteed - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The control centre also has a satellite-based aircraft tracking system to locate the accident site as quickly as possible in the event of an aircraft accident.

The AMREF Flying Doctors membership with Ndoto Reisen

Every customer who books a Tanzania or Zanzibar trip with Ndoto Safari receives a free AMREF Flying Doctors membership (silver*). This ensures that you also receive the best possible medical care on your East Africa holiday.

The Flying Doctors are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As a member of the Flying Doctors Service, you are entitled to free evacuation in the event of a medical emergency for the duration of your membership. The Emergency Service will fly you to a hospital of your choice in Nairobi. The emergency service is manned around the clock. Most flights are in Kenya and Tanzania, but the emergency service also flies to Somalia, Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sudan, Congo, Uganda and Madagascar. Some patients are even flown out to South Africa, Europe, Asia and the USA.
Tourist membership (silver *)

If you are planning a trip to East Africa and would like to be evacuated by the Amref Flying Doctors in a medical emergency, we recommend that you take out a tourist membership. The Federal Foreign Office in Germany also recommends membership in addition to international health insurance when travelling to Africa. Your membership also supports the humanitarian work of Amref Health Africa.

PLEASE NOTE: Membership of the Amref Flying Doctors enables you to be evacuated in a medical emergency and flown to a hospital in Nairobi. However, this membership does not replace (international) health insurance and does not include repatriation to your home country. *Valid for one month during the travel period
