Tanzania - A country of superlatives in the heart of East Africa
In the heart of East Africa lies beautiful Tanzania with the world-famous Serengeti and the legendary Zanzibar.
Year after year, this extraordinary country overwhelms its visitors with its pristine African wilderness, endless savannahs, green hills, high mountains, huge lakes and its unique flora and fauna.
Tanzania has the longest and largest lake in Africa, the crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Victoria. In addition, the lowest point - 697 metres below sea level - of the African continent is in Lake Tanganyika and the „Roof of Africa“, which is the highest point in Africa with the 5,895-metre-high, snow-capped Kilimanjaro, is also located in Tanzania.
Visitors can experience and discover 16 national parks, 14 protected areas and many other game reserves - or enjoy the spectacular views of the Ngorongoro region, a rift valley that runs through the entire country.
The Republic of Tanzania was created in 1961 through the unification of what was then Tanganyika and the archipelago of Zanzibar. Today's Tanzania covers an area of 946,000 km² and is almost three times the size of Germany.
In Tanzania, almost 40% of the total area is under conservation and is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world. Last year, almost 5 million tourists visited the country annually - with a focus on the northern national parks such as Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park and the fantastic Serengeti - to see the unique wildlife, untouched nature and spectacular landscapes, or simply to spend a wonderful beach holiday on the endless white sandy beaches of Zanzibar and its neighbouring islands of Pemba and Mafia.
Tanzania is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites with three World Heritage Sites and three Marine National Parks, including the Serengeti with its vast plains and constant animal migrations, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the ruins of Kisiwani and Songo Mnara, the large Selous Conservation Area, Kilimanjaro National Park, the old town of Stone Town on Zanzibar and the fascinating rock paintings of Kondoa.
The country enchants its guests time and again with its rich biodiversity, friendly people and the overwhelming beauty of its nature, making it unforgettable for visitors.
Tanzania is one of the last animal and plant paradises in Africa.
The Serengeti - with the great migration of millions of wildebeest and zebras - but also Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Olduvai Gorge ("Cradle of Humankind"), Great Rift Valley - these names fire the imagination and invite visitors to dream.
Experience the „Big Five“ on one of our safari round trips through the fantastic Serengeti - observe lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, leopards and many other wild animals „up close“ in their natural environment. Discover the large herds of elephants, the elegant giraffes and the various species of gazelles and antelopes in the national parks, such as the impala or the Grant's and Thomson's gazelles. But you can also find and marvel at the „Small Five“ with chameleons, leopard tortoises, dwarf antelopes, mongooses and rhinoceros beetles in beautiful Tanzania.
Be a spectator at one of the Serengeti's most beautiful natural spectacles and watch the annual migration of over millions of hoofed animals such as wildebeest and zebra in search of fresh grazing grounds.
Visit the natural treasures of Tanzania and Zanzibar and other highlights
Many people know Tanzania from documentaries or the Oscar-winning film „Serengeti must not die“ by Professor Bernhard Grzimek - and even here the images of unspoilt nature with its wild animals are impressive. Nevertheless, nothing comes close to the feeling of visiting this fascinating country with its friendly people and unique natural treasures.
Other highlights in Tanzania naturally include the beautiful Tarangire National Park (the size of Luxembourg) with its numerous wild animals, Lake Manyara National Park, Arusha National Park with its small Serengeti and Ruaha National Park with its large elephant population, as well as the largest game reserve in Tanzania and Africa with Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), which is known for its African wild dog populations and pristine safari adventures with unspoilt African nature.
In wonderful Tanzania, the lesser-known national parks in the east, such as Mkomazi National Park with its unique landscape between the Pare Mountains and the Kenyan border, which merges into Tsavo West National Park, also attract visitors. Here you can encounter large herds of elephants and giraffes as well as the black rhino and the now very rare African wild dogs.
Another special feature is the small Saadani National Park, the only one located on the beach of the Indian Ocean, with its large animal populations in savannah landscapes with acacia groves and mangrove forests. It also offers special attractions with a boat safari on the Wami River and crocodiles and hippos can be observed at close range.
Furthermore, the Mikumi National Park, also known as the small Serengeti, with its landscape of baobabs and grassy plains or the Kitulo National Park, which impresses with long hikes in the sea of wildflowers.
But also the Katavi National Park with its pristine wilderness or the Udzungwa Mountains National Park with its numerous bird species as well as primate density and fantastic waterfalls are definitely worth a visit.
The last paradises for chimpanzees are also located in Tanzania's most exclusive park - Gombe Stream National Park, famous for Dr Jane Goodall's research work, and the breathtaking Mahale Mountains National Park with its unique landscape on crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika, as well as Rubondo Island National Park.
Of course, a visit to the overhanging rock paintings of Kondoa, which are over 2,500 years old, or a detour to the world-famous, extraterrestrial "Mbozi meteorite", which is also known as the „Mbosi meteorite“, is also extremely interesting.
